The Centre for Population Health
Sciences (CePHaS), a department hosted by the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine
(LKCMedicine), was launched by Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on May 6, 2016. CePHaS
is currently headed by its Founding Director, Associate Professor Josip Car.
Leading to new population health
To unravel today’s most pressing challenges in population health, whether obesity, diabetes, depression or other non-communicable diseases, requires more than a single-discipline approach. At CePHaS, our approach is transdisciplinary — we have created teams comprised of scientists, clinicians and researchers from diverse disciplines, who work together to develop new integrated conceptual, methodological, and translational solutions to population health challenges.
Our ideas, research, and transformations — small and large — aim to assess, and where needed, challenge the conventions of who, how, where and when prevention, care, health education, treatment, and diagnostics occur. We aim to drive innovations that seek to ensure good health for all; accessible, affordable and high quality treatment; and good health outcomes. Our areas of focus include digital health, mHealth, eLearning, and health services and outcomes research.
What is population health?
Population health is a holistic ‘cradle to grave’ concept encompassing research from early childhood to end of life, and moves beyond health systems and the continuum of care to individuals, families, communities and societies. In other words, population health takes “a broader perspective than traditional medical care in that it extends the traditional 1:1 individual focus of medical care to a group, community, or population and encompasses health care delivery, public health, prevention, wellness and health promotion efforts, community engagement and resources, and health policy efforts”.
The 4 pillars of population health are: chronic care management, quality and safety, public health, and health policy.
