Family Medicine Special Interest Group



The Family Medicine Student Interest Group (FM SIG) has members from all years of study in LKCMedicine. It aims to be a platform through which medical students can learn more about Family Medicine, particularly in the following:

  • ​The scope of the speciality and what the discipline entails
  • How to become a family medicine doctor
  • Career options

The SIG plans to twin with other international student societies. The first such twinning was with Keele University’s General Practice Society. SIG also hopes to conduct more local training where students link up with doctors in family medicine in Singapore to gain a deeper understanding of their work.

The SIG committee for the current academic year 2019/2020 is:

Upcoming Events

  • ​18 Jan 2019: Life of a Family Physician Talk

    Three doctors from different Family Medicine backgrounds have been invited to share for this event. They will be touching on interesting topics such as the difference between public and private practice, the experiences of the family medicine residency program and the everyday encounters of a community hospital doctor.
  • Mar 2019: Family Medicine Sub-Specialty Talk

    After completion of training in Family Medicine, one may choose to further their training in various sub-specialties. They include specialties such as palliative medicine and sports medicine. Doctors from these vocations will be sharing their valued opinions and advices for those who are interested in these specialties.
  • Aug 2019: Family Medicine Extravaganza

    The annual tri-school Family Medicine Extravaganza will be visiting us again this year. Like previous years, residency program directors from various clusters (NHGP, SHP, NUP) will be invited. Along with them, we may also be inviting keynote speakers to give insights on other aspects of Family Medicine, specifically research.

Past Events

Research in Family Medicine
On August 5, 30 students from LKCMedicine, NUS Medicine and DUKE-NUS attended a seminar titled Research in Family Medicine at HQ Building’s Toh Kian Chui Lecture Theatre. Organised by the LKCMedSoc Family Medicine Student Interest Group, the seminar, which is aimed at sharing with students the various opportunities for research throughout their career as a Family Medicine doctor, featured various speakers including World Organisation of Family Doctors President Professor Amanda Howe who delivered the keynote speech, Professor of Family Medicine & Primary Care Helen Smith and LKCMedicine Year 3 student Teo Liang Ming who spoke on his experience in Family Medicine research. The event concluded with a lively Q&A, followed by a tea reception.
