Associate Professor Thong graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1994. He has remained fascinated with clinical immunology and rheumatology since his days as a house-officer in TTSH. Upon completion of his basic training in Internal Medicine, he went on to complete his advance specialty training in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology/Allergy at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) from 1999-2002. This was followed by a clinical fellowship in paediatric and adult Clinical Immunology/Allergy at the University of Southampton and Southampton General Hospital, United Kingdom from 2002-2003. He is presently Head and Senior Consultant at the Department of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology, TTSH.

He has been part of the curriculum team developing the Musculoskeletal Teaching Block for LKCMedicine's Phase I, and also contributed some of the application exercises for the Immunology Team-Based Learning. He is Core Faculty Member for the NHG Senior Residency in Rheumatology, and member of the Rheumatology Residency Advisory Committee. Apart from undergraduate teaching, he also contributes to teaching residents in internal medicine, family physicians, pharmacists and nurses. He is also actively involved in Lupus Association (Singapore) and National Arthritis Foundation as a council member, looking after financial subsidies for expensive agents for patients.
Apart from being Vice-President of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Society (Singapore), he is also World Allergy Organization’s web regional editor for the Asia Pacific, co-chair of the Drug Allergy Special Committee and member of the Anaphylaxis Special Committees.
He is a member of the editorial board for the journal Allergy, and section editor for the Drug Allergy issue of the Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology. He has published in more than 50 peer-reviewed international journals with his research interests being lupus, adolescent rheumatology, drug allergy, food allergy and anaphylaxis.
Among his teaching awards include the TTSH Best Young Teacher Award (2001), TTSH Top 10 Teachers (2008),  TTSH Best Teacher Award (Senior Category) (2010) and NHG Teaching Excellence Award (Senior Category) (2010).
