Dr Tai Hwei Yee, M.B.B.S, M.Med(Anaesthesia) graduated in Medicine from the National University of Singapore in 1982 and obtained her specialist degree in Anaesthesiology from the same University in 1987. She joined Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) as Registrar in the Department of Anaesthesia and became a Senior Consultant in 1999. She underwent further training in Intensive Care Medicine and was the Director of Surgical Intensive Care Unit at TTSH from 1996 to 1999. In 2000, she established Singapore’s first outpatient, nursebased Pre-operative Anaesthesia Care Unit to evaluate and optimise patients for surgery, and was made the unit’s Director from 2000 to 2002.
From 1999 to 2008, she was concurrently appointed as Director of the Casemix Unit in TTSH. During this time, she established Singapore’s first Case Management Unit which utilised evidence-based protocols to coordinate care for the hospital’s patients on clinical pathways and patients with chronic diseases and complex clinical issues. In 2003, Dr Tai received the Medal of Valour from the government of Singapore for her role in supporting the national response in overcoming SARS.
She was appointed Assistant Chairman, Medical Board for Clinical Quality and Audit at TTSH in 2004 and as the Deputy Chief Quality Officer for National Healthcare Group(NHG) in 2008. Dr Tai guided the development of the clinical quality and patient safety framework in TTSH and NHG. Through this framework, changes to processes of care and professional education have resulted in better quality and improved safety. These included the institution of team-based patient safety training, establishment of clinician-led quality improvement training and the use of technology and improved medication safety through the use of electronic prescribing and clinical decision support. Dr Tai contributes her expertise on committees in many areas such as medication safety, health technology assessment, chronic disease management, electronic health records at hospital, cluster and national level.
