Honorary Assoc Prof Wong Hon Tym

Clinical Associate Professor Wong Hon Tym is the Medical Director of Singapore’s National Healthcare Group Eye Institute. He is also a Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Tan Tock Seng Hospital. 
 
He is a member of the hospital’s Medical Board, and in 2008 was appointed Clinical Director of NHG 1-Health, a multi-disciplinary community-based ambulatory surgery centre. 
 
On 1 March 2015, he was appointed as Clinical Director of Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI).  Our Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI) will be ready in 2018/19, He will co-lead and develop CHI as a thought leadership platform for Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Healthcare Transformation, Innovation and Improvement to achieve Value Outcomes in Healthcare.
 
A/Prof Wong obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and his Masters degree in Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 1999.
 
A/Prof Wong was awarded Singapore’s Ministry of Health Manpower Development Programme scholarship in 2002, and underwent a clinical fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, UK, where his sub-specialty training focused on optic nerve head imaging in glaucoma. Imaging remains his area of interest, as well as the management of angle closure glaucoma. His research projects, covering topics such as glaucoma surgery, anterior segment imaging and therapeutics have been published in major peer-reviewed journals and presented at ARVO.
 
A/Prof Wong plays an active role in the training and education of junior ophthalmologists in Singapore, and his efforts were with multiple Best Teacher Awards. He has been mentor to four clinical fellows and has been a course instructor at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting, the World Glaucoma Congress and the European Glaucoma Society Congress.
 
His efforts in quality patient care have also been recognized with Singapore’s Excellent Service Star Award in 2006 and his appointment as one of the hospital’s Critical Incident Managers and Open Communication instructors reflects his keen interest in the area of patient communication. At NHG 1-Health, A/Prof Wong has also lead the design & development of the hospital’s streamlined cataract value-added process (VAP).
 
In May 2013, A/Prof Wong Hon Tym has received a Distinguish Service Award from Khoo Teck Phuat Hospital for Eye and Vision Health Awarded [Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)]. He has also been awarded the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Outstanding Citizenship (OC) Award in 2014.
